DAVID ZAMBRANO'S COUPLE DANCING WORKSHOP

OVERVIEW OF THE DAY:

10am - 1pm          PART 1: Introduction to principles and tools for partnering

           1pm - 2:15pm       LUNCH

2:15pm - 5pm       PART 2: Continued exploration of principles into performance Jam

Luca Braccia and Orley Quick are excited to come together for the first time to co-teach a 1-day workshop sharing elements of David Zambrano’s Couple Dancing. This language includes principles from paired social dancing alongside elements of his Passing Through system.

'David takes the history of partner dancing and redefines it as something that could be more appropriate

for the modern era, following the influence of contact improvisation, shifting gender roles.'

Zambrano’s Couple Dancing framework is a great meeting place for people from all sorts of experiences and backgrounds, including those who have worked with specific couple dancing styles (e.g., salsa, tango, Lindy Hop) or any other contemporary partnering work (e.g. contact improvisation, etc.), as well as movers who have never tried partner work before. It focuses on dancing with different people, so attending with a dance partner is not required.

The workshop will explore the use of ‘eloquent hands’ and the ‘body as a whole’ to dialogue with a partner. The session will introduce various tools to shape your dancing, each focusing on specific principles and concepts, and will include a series of playful and engaging tasks as a solo or with partners. The workshop will culminate in a performance jam session to experience the full joy of social dancing and play rhythmically with various music genres. You will apply your overall learning with a multitude of partners, where leading and following can be taken by either or both partners beyond more traditional gender-based roles.

Luca and Orley will deliver this workshop based on their experiences and the skills acquired through direct learning with David Zambrano, assisted by Milan Herich at the Tic Tac Art Centre in Brussels, in the past few years.
